Parents and Grandparents (PGP) Program re-opens this fall

Beginning on May 21, IRCC will extend invitations to approximately 35,700 potential sponsors from the pool of remaining interest-to-sponsor forms submitted in 2020, allowing them to sponsor their parents and grandparents. These invitations will be distributed over a period of about two weeks. If you submitted an interest-to-sponsor form in 2020, we encourage you to review the email address you provided at that time for any communication from IRCC.

The Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP) is designed to enable Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residency in Canada. This initiative not only fosters familial closeness but also strengthens the rich tapestry of cultural and familial connections that define Canadian society.

Under the PGP, eligible sponsors have the opportunity to bring their parents or grandparents to Canada, granting them access to the full benefits of permanent residency, including employment opportunities, healthcare access, and the option to apply for Canadian citizenship after meeting residency requirements.

Participation in the PGP involves sponsors submitting their interest-to-sponsor forms, typically done in 2020. Selected sponsors are then invited to formally apply for PGP sponsorship through random draws. Essentially, the PGP operates as a lottery-based system, with applicants proceeding only upon receiving an Invitation to Apply following random selection

Upon receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for the Parent Grandparent Program in 2024, the next phase involves a detailed application process, comprising  a Sponsor Application and a Permanent Residence Application. Applicants should be prepared for a meticulous documentation process, ensuring accuracy and currency of all information provided to prevent any potential processing delays.

If you didn’t submit an interest to sponsor form in 2020, your parents and grandparents can still come to Canada for an extended visit by applying for a super visa. They will be able to visit for up to 5 years at a time and extend their stay while in Canada. For additional details, feel free to get in touch with us.
