Canada
recognizes the immense contributions of international students to its social,
cultural, and economic landscape. In recent months, Immigration, Refugees and
Citizenship Canada has implemented reforms to the International Student
Program, aimed at ensuring system integrity while safeguarding students from
fraudulent activities and financial risks.
The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and
Citizenship, announced the conclusion of the temporary policy permitting
students to work more than 20 hours per week off campus, effective April 30,
2024, with no extension planned. This autumn, there will be adjustments to the
weekly off-campus work limit, increasing it to 24 hours.
Emphasizing the primary purpose of students being in Canada for
educational pursuits, the revision to allow up to 24 hours of off-campus work
per week aims to prioritize academic commitments while providing flexibility
for employment when necessary.
During the summer term, students on scheduled academic breaks will
retain the option to work unlimited hours.
This decision is informed by considerations of student needs,
international policies, and research findings indicating the negative impact of
excessive work on academic performance. The adjustment strikes a balance,
enabling students to pursue employment opportunities without compromising their
educational outcomes. Further details will be communicated in due course.
In
parallel, efforts continue to advance the Recognized Institutions Framework,
recognizing post-secondary institutions that uphold rigorous standards in
selecting, supporting, and retaining international students. Upholding the
commitment to support and safeguard international students from financial
vulnerability remains a priority, alongside maintaining the integrity of the
International Student Program.
